A vehicle's exhaust and pollution control systems are examined as part of a multi-part smog check. The process typically entails a visual inspection of the system and its parts, a functional evaluation of the system's various parts' proper operation, a check of the car's computer and diagnostics (also known as the on-board diagnostics, or OBD) systems, and a check to determine the number of emissions coming from the tailpipe.
